Dawakin Tofa Local Government traces its roots back to traditional Hausa‑Fulani settlements. Historically, the area was part of the powerful Kano Emirate, a key hub in the trans‑Saharan trade network.
Over time, Dawakin Tofa evolved into a distinct local government in Kano, known for its rich cultural tapestry and agricultural heritage.
Dawakin Tofa Local Government was created in 1976, during the Local Government Reform during Murtala Muhammad/Obasanjo Administration. At that time it was made up of District with 99 Villages , subsequent development of the creation of the additional Local Government out of the present day Dawakin Tofa Local Government, the new Local Government curved out from Dawakin Tofa Local Government, Bagwai, Rimin Gado and Tofa Local Governments respectively. Currently Dawakin Tofa Local Government consists of one district with 38 Village Heads. The inhabitants of the area are mostly Hausa Fulani, however, there are Kanuri settlements sparsely located in the area. Principal occupation of the people includes:
As per 2006 census, the Local Government has the population of 246,247 people spread across the 487 square meters and land mass. Dawakin Tofa Local Government shares boarders with Ungogo Local Government at south-east through villages like Fagen Kawo, Dawanau and Tumfafi, on the eastern direction boardered through Kwidawa and Dandalama Villages, at the northern site through Gwamai and Ganduje, it boardered with Bichi and Makoda Local Governments, western side through the Stream of Watari in Tofa Local Government, while through Kiyawa of Bagwai Local Government.
Dawakin Tofa is situated in northern Nigeria, within Kano State. Its geographical coordinates are approximately 12.1261° N latitude and 8.3986° E longitude. The LGA shares borders with other Kano LGAs and lies near the northern edge of Kano State, close to the boundary with Jigawa State.
The LGA is a melting pot of Hausa and Fulani cultures, with these two ethnic groups being the most prominent. Hausa and Fulfulde languages are widely spoken, and Islam is the predominant religion. Traditional arts, music, and festivals reflect the rich cultural legacy of the people, while landmarks like the historic Dawanau Market showcase the area’s commercial and cultural vibrancy.
As of the 2006 Nigerian census, Dawakin Tofa had a population of about 247,875 residents. More recent estimates suggest around 246,247 people, indicating a stable population size.
Dawakin Tofa Local Government is blessed with mineral resources as follows:- · A Grand water quakity study Dawakin Tofa found elevated manganese and iron in ground water which could hint at geologic source of these metals in the local bed-rock. · The study note that some of the rocks in the area (laterite or weathered rock) are associated with these heavy metal.
