BRIEF HISTORY OF KANO MUNICIPAL COUNCIL:

Kano Municipal is one of the 44 Local Government Areas of Kano State. It hold a significant historical, political, economic importance due to its central location within the city of Kano which is one of the oldest and prominent cities in West Africa. The City of Kano is dated back to around 10th Century. Kano Municipal Council was curved out to cover the city centre and its immediate surroundings like Gwale, Dala, Tarauni, Fagge and Kumbotso. It serves as the political and administrative headquarters of Kano State.

Kano Municipal Council is the heart of Kano city and host key institution such as The Emir’s Palace, centuries-old international markets, historic City Central Mosques and other religious centres. It is deeply tide to the history of Kano city which evolved from an ancient Hausa settlement to a modern urban centre, the Local Government reflects centuries of political, religious, commercial and cultural development, making it one of the most historically rich regions in Nigeria.

Kano State was created in 1967 with Kano Municipal Council as one of its Local Government Areas. It is a one of the major commercial centers in the state, home to several and famous international markets including Kantin Kwari Market which is one of the largest textile market in Africa, historic Kurmi, Kofar Wambai, Rimi and Sharada Markets. The Local Government has a total land area of 17skm.

TOURIST ATTRACTION CENTRES:

Kano Municipal has a plethora of exciting tourist attraction places to explore, they include the following:

  • KANO EMIR’S PALACE (GIDAN RUMFA): It is a 15th century palace and symbol of traditional Hausa architecture, tradition and royalty. It is located at the heart of Kano city accommodation the Emir of Kano of his servants.
  • GIDAN MAKAMA MESEUM: It is also a 15th century building, it is originally a palace of Makaman Kano which is later transformed to a major historical and cultural significance, it has eleven (11) galleries showcasing Hausa architectures, city walls, colonial era local economy, ancient Hausa music instruments and clothing, e.t.c.
  • KURMI MARKETS: It is one of the oldest markets in Africa established back then in 15th It has a history of Trans-Sahara trade. Kurmi market is well known in textiles, leather goods, spices, local crafts for souvenirs and vast number of local items. It is indeed an international tourist attraction centre.
  • KANO ZOOLOGICAL GARDEN: It is officially known as Audu Bako Zoological Garden located in Kano Municipal Council. It was established in July, 1971 and officially opened to the public in November, 1972 during the then Military Governor of Kano State, Alh. Audu Bako. The park covers approximately 46 hectares with 350 animals.
  • ANCIENT CITY WALLS (GANUWA) AND GATES (KOFOFI): The ancient city walls and gates were defensive measures built around the city of Kano as early as 11th century under the reign of Sarki Gajimasu in 1095 later expanded by Sarki Rumfa in 15th The city walls and gates surrounded the entire city as defensive measure against intruders and rival traditional rulers. The gates include Kofar Mata, Kofar Nasarawa, Sabuwar Kofa, and Kofar Dan’agundi. These are the gates located within Kano Municipal Council.
  • KOFAR MATA DYE PITS: It is an indigenous dye pit located very close to Kofar Mata Gate in Kano city. It is a place where artisans demonstrate traditional fabric dyeing techniques. It is dated back to centuries and it is still functioning as traditional dyeing is still being made there.
  • ADO BAYERO MALL: It alternatively known as SHOPRITE, it is a modern and one of the biggest super market and recreation centre in Nigeria established during the late years of the emirship of late Emir of Kano Alhaji Ado Bayero, it attracts tourist from within and outside Nigeria.

GEO POLITICAL LOCATION:

Kano Municipal Council of Kano State lies on Latitude from 11° 57′ 30” to 12° 0′ 30” N and Longitude from 8° 29′ 30” to 8° 32′ 30” E. it is located within the Municipality of Kano City, The area includes parts of the ancient city. The Head Quarters of the Council is located along Emir Place Road opposite Kofar Kudu Gidan Sarki.

MINERAL RESOURCES:

Information on the specific mineral resources found in Kano Municipal Council is very limited. However, some mineral resources found in Kano State might be present in Kano Municipal Council, they include Columbite, Tantalite, Gold, Kaolin, Limestone among other mineral resources.

POPULATION SIZE:

According to 2006 Nigeria’s National Population Census, Kano Municipal Council has a population of 365,525. However, recent estimates suggests that the population of Kano Municipal has grown significantly, it is estimated to be around 512,400 in 2022.

  • 0 – 14 years = 161,591
  • 15 – 64 years = 198,289
  • 65 + years = 11,363
