W.E.S.H. Department

The Water, Environment, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WESH) Department is dedicated to improving public health and living standards in rural communities. It acts as the supervisor for Rural Water Supply and Environmental Sanitation initiatives executed by the local governments.

The department is proactive in disease prevention and health promotion. It oversees the implementation of supply and distribution chains for health preventive programs, ensuring communities have access to the tools needed for a healthy environment.

Units & Interventions

The department operates through three functional units: Water Supply, Environmental Sanitation/Hygiene, and Monitoring & Evaluation. These units work together to deliver comprehensive WASH services to the 44 LGAs.

In terms of Water Infrastructure, the department monitors the construction and maintenance of rural water sources, including Hand Pumps, Motorized Boreholes, and Solar Powered Boreholes. This ensures sustainable access to clean drinking water for remote communities.

The department’s Sanitation & Health mandate involves the promotion of hygiene in communities and institutions. This includes executing fumigation exercises, chlorination of water sources, and the distribution of mosquito nets and facemasks to combat vector-borne and communicable diseases.

The supervising authority for the 44 Local Government Areas and the Emirate Council, ensuring effective administration and grassroots development across the state.
