The institution of local government is about political and administrative devolution for effective grassroots mobilization and development. In popular political parlance, government would describe the system as “bringing government closer to the people”.
The important thing in this idea is not just the transfer of resources and means from the centre to the periphery but the way these resources are handled. Management of resources and citizenship participation is very crucial to decentralization and development.
Prior to Local Government reforms, Wudil was one of the district that made up the then Kano south administration Division, with Rano as headquarters.
In the year 1976, the first Local Government reform was introduced, where Wudil Local Government came into being composing of Wudil and Sumaila district with Wudil town as a headquarters.
Wudil Local Government is about 40km away from Kano city, which share boarders with Warawa at north-west, Gaya from the east, Garko from the south, Dawakin kudu by the west and Albasu from south-east.
Geographically, Wudil is located between longitude 805 and 90 Degree as well as latitude 1200 and 11030 degree. The local government area is situated in savanna region which is characterized by two season i.e. rainy and dry season.
Wudil Local Government experience ecological problem such as design of potion of agricultural dwelling lands and flooding during the rainy season. And the dry season has two major characteristics which are cold and dry that is called hammatan. It normally starts from November to February where the hot season starts from March to June.
The main occupation of Wudil inhabitant is farming and fishing, and popular crops grown in the area include, sorghum, maize, cowpea, millet, Rice and groundnut in rainy season, while in dry season they produce vegetables like carrot, tomato, wheat, sugarcane. water melon, pepper, onion, cowpea and maize.
Wudil Local Government according to 2006 population census stands at 188,639 (male 100357 and female 88,282) people who are predominantly Hausa/Fulani by tribe with few number of other business migrants from southern part, like Igbos and Yoruba who are engage in wide range of commercial activities.
The Local Government area comprises of both Muslims and Christians and they are living peacefully.
Wudil Local Government is made up of ten political wards each of them is represented by an elected councilor under democratically elected council, the wards are as follows:
